Heroes of the Faith

I love hanging out with other missionaries. There is nothing better than hearing stories of what God is doing around the world, among various people groups, and right in our own backyard. I love the creativity, yet often simplicity with which they do ministry. It is my favorite piece of being a part of the Assemblies of God. It is truly a missionary movement.
This amazing lady, Linda Arzouni (not the best picture because the lighting was bad where I was), spoke today and shared the amazing ministry her and her husband do among Muslims in Mali. Their parents were part of our church in Santa Cruz and I am so blessed to know them.

College/Young Adults Retreat

A Ministry Update from the Kertsons

By far, the highlight of this past month was being the guest speaker at a college/young adult retreat down in San Diego. Preaching out in the elements had its challenges from rain, to wind, to lack of light, and lots of smoke in my eyes around the campfire. None of those challenges kept God from moving in the lives of people, however. It did keep a number of people (including myself) from getting a lot of sleep, especially the first night when only three tents survived the wind and rain. Most people ended up sleeping in cars that first night, but the weather Saturday and Sunday was beautiful!

I preached out of Luke 24 and Acts 1-2, one chapter each night (give or take). We asked the questions: “How do I know Jesus?” “How do I experience Jesus?” and “How do I live Jesus?” Needless to say, God’s word does not return void, many of the students/young adults experienced the power of the Spirit and were encouraged to step out in faith in different areas of their lives. I got the chance to pray for a large number of students the last night (see the collage above) and many of them came to me afterward amazed that what I prayed was exactly what they needed to hear even though I had not asked them what they needed prayer for. God still speaks today! Finally, we saw the beginnings of a grace-filled, Spirit-initiated community begin to form and many students shared their excitement about how they can add to this community in light of Acts 2:42ff and what God had been speaking to them personally.

Perhaps what excited me the most was that this was our first ministry with college/young adults in San Diego since God has called us to San Diego State. If our time at SDSU resembles anything like what God did this weekend, watch out San Diego State! The Kingdom of God is near!

Beyond the retreat this month has been full of meeting with amazing people. I get the privilege in this season of meeting with people one-on-one or as couples to share the vision of what we will be doing at San Diego State and inviting them to join our team in some capacity. As I meet with more people, my heart gets increasingly excited about what God will do through our ministry and the amazing partners God is bringing to join us in prayer, finances, and working on the ground. People are catching the vision!

Family Update

  • We had an offer accepted on a house about 2 miles from campus. Check it out here, even though the pictures do not do it justice! Our scheduled move date is June 30.
  • We have begun potty training Eden. Pray for us!
  • Kendra has started choreographing one of our favorite shows, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for a Christian youth theater company (CYT) in Santa Cruz.

Candidate Commissioning

A Ministry Update from the Kertsons

Eleven couples. Eleven different ministries. Eleven visions of reaching the United States for Christ.

March 14-22 I spent the week in Springfield, MO where the Assemblies of God is headquartered. Along with ten other couples (though not all spouses were there), we received training, prayer, and encouragement about the ministry we will be doing over the next 6-12 months. Each one of us will be raising a budget full-time in order to do the ministry God has called us to.

What a privilege to have gone through this process with other amazing people who are doing amazing ministry. One man and his wife are going to be ministering to Russian Jews in New York City, and he is from Africa. The journey God has brought him on is amazing. Another couple will be educating the church on the importance of orphan-care in America. Another will be ministering to teens in the Appalachian mountains. Just to name a few! Even though their ministries are different than mine, it was inspiring to be able to spend time with them and to be walking this journey together.

It was also awesome to meet the national Chi Alpha staff. Going in, I certainly had positional respect for them, but coming away I have personal respect for them, their leadership, and their ministries. It is awesome to be a part of such an amazing movement with such a heart to reach people for Jesus. They gave me and the other couple from Chi Alpha there amazing resources, ideas, and prayers to launch us into this next season of ministry! Praise God for awesome co-laborers like them and for co-laborers like you who partner with us on a monthly basis in prayer and finances. I am grateful.
